The figurative birds in Haser’s work are a reflection of his ancestral heritage, a symbol of his tupuna and a gateway between this world and the afterlife. Haser describes the birds in his works as “The Watchers”, physical forms that have descended in to the next life that continue to hold a spiritual presence and light the way in this life.

Surface Smiles comes from a body of works that explore the toxic coping mechanisms around mental health. They portray the immense effort we go through to disguise the internal pain, and the unsustainable approach of covering it up.
The words “help me” are forever on the tip of the tongue but never seem to manifest themselves into a conversation. Without an outlet for help, we find ourselves adopting the art of an illusive smile, a facade of confidence and humour to mask the deterioration of our internal battles.
